Two songs, one meaning. Frank Sinatra and Eminem??

That's right! I dare compare the great Frank Sinatra with Eminem!
Two songs:

My way, by Frank
Lose yourself, by Eminem (yes, I put the clean version here)

Yes, I have eclectic taste in music.  But if you stop to think about it, the subject of both songs is quite similar. The Lyrics are easily found in a google search.

Both Sinatra and Eminem talk about taking life by the bal...horns and bending it to their own will.  Sinatra 'To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels'. Eminem: 'you only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow this opportunity comes once in a lifetime'

Both men talk themselves up. They're bad asses. They kowtow to nobody. They've taken their shots, reached for the top and made it.  The major difference is Sinatra's is more of a reflection while Eminem's is more of a head's up -I'm coming so look out.  Sinatra has been there, done that and is giving the world one final eff you (in whatever classy style Sinatra would do such a thing)  while Eminem, at the point in his career when he wrote this song, had much to prove and, I know it is hard to believe, was just beginning to doll out his eff you's.

My take home from both songs is this; You have one life. One chance. One go-around. One shot.  You can sit back and watch it pass by or you can get up and go after it.  What is the It It is different for everyone.

Some people are content never to reach for It because reaching for It can be dangerous.  You could fail.  In fact, you're more likely to fail than succeed when you chase after It.  But...simply going for It earns you my respect (for whatever that's worth). Failing as a result of chasing It is an admirable thing in my opinion.  At least you've tried to go for It.  Most people don't go for It.

Then there are those who can't live without going after It.  They can't sit still. It haunts their every thought.  They fail.  They get up. They try again.  They take solace in the fact that even if they fail, they can say they've gone after It and to them, that is more respectable than never trying at all.

Which one are you? There It goes....will you follow?

  1. Very interesting choice of words: It. So many think It was just a clown, and they are wrong, It is everything you describe here, written by Paul Anka (made famous by Frank)for a 4 minute song, Eminem for a 4 minute song, and by King in 1000 pages. It scares the heck out of me.

    1. Yes, It can inspire fear- more so than most things...and doubt, anxiety, doubt, did I mention doubt?

  2. Starting with you have an eclectic taste in music. Here here and three cheers for that! Sinatra and Eminem, you dared to put them both in the same blog post! And I thought I was strange for saying that Lose Yourself was reminiscent of Thoreau's "A Civil Disobedience". I like the way you think and thank you for this engaging post. I mean really, it is the same message over and over again, Are you going to grab whatever is your brass ring? Thank you for this post; I'm off to go get my IT...
